Why Are People Filing Depo-Provera Lawsuits?

Depo-Provera is used by over 70 million women around the world as an affordable and reliable form of birth control and sometimes to treat other conditions, like endometriosis and anemia, among others.

On the market since 1959, Depo-Provera became the 238th most commonly prescribed medication in the United States by 2021.

However, a study published in the British Medical Journal in March 2024 has uncovered a disturbing connection between Depo-Provera and an increased risk of developing intracranial meningiomas — a type of brain tumor.

The study found that women using Depo-Provera for more than a year are 5.6 times more likely to develop meningiomas. Below are some quick facts about the research study done in France:

  • Researchers reviewed the health records of over 108,000 women.

  • They focused on 18,000 women who had undergone surgery for meningiomas from 2009 to 2018.

  • The study found that women who used certain progestogens (hormonal treatments), like Depo-Provera, faced a much higher risk of developing meningiomas.

  • Women who used the injections for a year or more were at the greatest risk.

  • Although two other drugs used for menopause relief showed an increased risk of meningiomas, Depo-Provera produced the highest association among them.

Searcy Denney is investigating claims for women who were diagnosed with meningiomas after using Depo-Provera. The FDA had previously denied Depo-Provera for birth control purposes twice before due to cancer concerns. However, it’s frustrating to learn that, despite concerns raised in the past about cancer risks, Depo-Provera’s label never properly warned about the possibility of meningiomas.

Feeling like you’re at the mercy of drug manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies can be stressful, especially when your health is on the line. At Searcy Denney, we fight for and amplify the voices of people harmed by dangerous drugs.

It’s not only about winning your case; it’s about sending a message to Pfizer that unsafe drugs have no place on our market or in your body. Together, we can make the drug market safer for everyone.

Did Pfizer Know About the Risks of Brain Tumors and Depo-Provera?

In a statement issued after the BMJ study, Pfizer, the manufacturer of Depo-Provera, said:

“We are aware of this potential risk associated with long-term use of progestogens and, in collaboration with regulatory agencies, are in the process of updating product labels and patient information leaflets with appropriate wording.”

Although studies have shown a potential connection between Depo-Provera and meningiomas, this risk was not included on the drug’s warning label or patient leaflets, notably in the United States. The drug’s label only highlights a slightly elevated risk for breast cancer, stroke, blood clots, and liver complications.

While Pfizer has updated Depo-Provera’s label in Europe, this information has unfortunately not found its way to the U.S. versions of the drug labeling, leaving many women in the dark about the full extent of the possible side effects.

What Compensation Is Available in a Depo-Provera Lawsuit?

Removing a tumor can be challenging since the brain is very delicate, and tumors can develop in tricky locations that make their extraction difficult. The surgery expenses and medical bills that pile up after such a major operation can be stressful.

A Depo-Provera lawsuit can help you get financial relief following your injuries. By taking legal action, you may be able to receive compensation to cover the following:

  • Past and Future Medical Expenses: A lawsuit can reimburse you for surgery to remove your tumor, hospital stays, doctor’s appointments, medical bills, and therapy.

  • Lost Wages or Loss of Future Earning Capacity: Surgery can take a lot out of you, leaving you unable to work, but a lawsuit can cover lost wages for the time you were unable to work or if you cannot return to work.

  • Pain and Suffering: A tumor can be draining and scary, so a lawsuit can get you financial support for the physical and emotional pain you experienced.

  • Punitive Damages: This compensation aims to punish the company for its actions and may be ordered in instances of individuals/companies knowingly placing dangerous drugs on the market.

For over 45 years, the experienced partners at Searcy Denney have fought for those harmed by dangerous drugs and stood by them every step of the way on their journey toward justice and recovery. We’re not afraid to go toe-to-toe with big corporations. Our commitment to our clients’ health and well-being has helped us recover over $6.2 billion in verdicts and settlements.
